One Athenaeum Row
257 Benefit Street

Constructed ca. 1845, 257 Benefit Street is one of five, four-story, brick row houses set along the east side of historic Benefit Street. Designed by architects William Tallman and James Bucklin, the heirs of Thomas Poynton Ives built this as an investment property. One Athenaeum Row was purchased by its current owner, Edmond Nickerson, in 2000. Nickerson worked with architect Cornelis J. de Boer of Haynes/de Boer Associates to update the building while retaining as much original historic fabric as possible. The care and effort put forth in meticulously restoring this property will help to ensure that it remains an important piece of the Providence landscape for years to come. This project was the recipient of PPS's 2002 Residential Rehabilitation/Restoration Award.

Festival of Historic Houses 30th Anniversary – A Grand Celebration

PPS celebrated the 30th Anniversary of its signature event in style with a special kick-off on May 29, a June 6 tour in the majestic Stimson Avenue area, and a June 7 tour in the eclectic West End.

Kicking off the festivities, Tiffany & Co. sponsored a “Tiffany Garden Party” on Friday, May 29 in the historic Angell Street house and garden owned by Brooke and Eugene Lee. The company’s donation of wrapped Tiffany Blue Boxes® gave adventurous partygoers the opportunity to further support PPS by purchasing a box, not knowing what was inside. When the boxes were opened, everyone was the winner of a Tiffany gift. Two of the boxes also contained special gifts: one, a sterling silver skeleton key pendant and the other, a grand prize diamond quatrefoil key pendant. The lucky winners of the special gifts were Debra Fitch and Alice Miles. More than 200 party patrons enjoyed wonderful food, drink, décor, and company.
