State Parking Lot Proposed for Francis St.

On Tuesday, January 20, members of the Capital Center Commission Design Review Committee heard a proposal by the State of Rhode Island Department of Administration for a 100+ space parking lot on Francis Street. The site, designated as Parcel 15 in Capital Center, was recently purchased by the State. The parking lot would be intended for use by State employees. Although the parking lot would be considered an "interim use," no long-term plans for the property have been developed.

Members of the Committee voiced concern that the proposal may be inconsistent with Capital Center regulations, as well as the State Employee Transportation Guide Plan that pushes for fewer automobile trips for State employees. Following the meeting, PPS sent a letter urging Governor Gina Raimondo to reconsider the State's decision to build a parking lot on the site. The State House Lawn was listed on PPS' Most Endangered Properties list in 2014 following the reconfiguration and expansion of a parking on the east side of the property.
