A Benefit to Restore Providence's Mayoral Portraits
Beautifying Providence City Hall's elegant Central Hall and gracing the walls of the City Council and Aldermen's Chambers hang one of the most complete collections of mayoral portraits of any city in America. This group of thirty-two elaborately framed oil paintings, spanning more than 170 years, are the work of some of the region's finest artists, among them James S. Lincoln, Hugo Breul, Charles W. Stetson, Sidney A. Burleigh, and presidential portraitist G.P.A. Healy. Together, they represent an important part of our capital city's political and artistic heritage. While a number of these paintings have been restored, many suffer from the corrosive effects of time and several are severely damaged.
Recently, an effort was launched to rescue these invaluable works of art before it is too late. Given the fragile condition of city finances, Mayor Taveras along with Council President Pro Tempore Terrence Hassett have joined forces to help raise the funds necessary from the private sector to continue the restoration process. Mayor Taveras and Councilman Hassett, supported by a 40-member host committee of former Providence mayors and community leaders, are encouraging everyone interested in preserving these irreplaceable cultural icons to attend the event on September 27th.
Please Join Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Council President Pro Tempore Terrence M. Hassett For a benefit supporting the
Restoration of Providence's Mayoral Portraits.
