Beneficent Congregational Church, Citation for Renovation, 300 Weybosset Street
The renovation of the historic Beneficent Congregational Church serves as an example of a successful addition to a highly significant historic building, which helps to keep the building in service and in its original use. The new construction not only allows the church to meet 21st century needs, but also helps the church to serve its mission while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original building. The church’s pastor, Rev. Richard H. Taylor, has overseen a project which provides much-needed updates for the building and has made the interior more easily accessible to people in wheelchairs. The sensitive design of the addition is attributed to Haynes/DeBoer Architects and its high quality construction was executed by general contractor E.W. Burman. The church’s stewardship of this prominent historic landmark serves as a model for all congregations throughout the city.
