Calender Mills, Rehabilitation & Neighborhood Revitalization Award, 52 Valley Street
Part of the Providence, Dyeing, Bleaching and Calendering Company Complex on Valley Street, the Calender Mills buildings represent a critical part of Olneyville and Providence’s mill heritage. Through the thoughtful, well-executed rehabilitation of this building, the Armory Revival Company and Streuver Brothers, Eccles, & Rouse helped preserve a part of that past. The building is one of several along Valley Street that has recently been rehabilitated, injecting new life into this previously struggling industrial corridor.
Durkee, Brown, Viveiros, & Werenfels Architects reimagined the two structures as a variety of efficient, affordable and market rate residential and commercial spaces. Historic character and original architectural features were successfully integrated with modern conveniences and code requirements. Original industrial-scale window openings were retained, providing ample natural light to the interior. Yoder + Tidwell, LTD. acted as structural engineers and Searle & Searle contributed as landscape architects. While small in scale compared to some of the other nearby mill complexes, the quality of the Calendar Mills rehabilitation makes the buildings stand out along the Valley Street streetscape.
