Rehabilitation Award for the Ritz Camera Building, 62 Orange Street
D+P Real Estate purchased the Ritz Camera Building (ca.1922) at 62 Orange Street in 2010, undertaking a complete rehabilitation of this three story masonry structure located at the heart of the financial district. The property was most recently used as a camera shop and film processing facility but had been left vacant when Ritz Camera went into bankruptcy in 2009.
Rehabilitation of the building included the conversion of the upper floors to a mix of loft style office and residential use. The ground floor space was converted to a restaurant and bar, preserving much of the original interior character including original tin ceilings, wood floors (which had been covered over in asbestos tiles), and wood trim around the store’s front transom.
The exterior store front, including the panel wood work and decorative cornice moldings, were also restored and new storefront glass was installed.
The restaurant is called 'Congress Tavern' taking its name from the pub which occupied the first floor space right after prohibition ended in the 1930's.
