Firehouse 13, Adaptive Reuse/Neighborhood Revitalization/Community Involvement Award, 41 Central Street
Firehouse 13, along with the nearby Pearl Street Lofts, is helping create an identity for a neighborhood that has been plagued by abandoned mill buildings for years. The Art Recreation Center purchased the firehouse in 2001. At that time it had been abandoned for fifty years. The nearly condemned space has been creatively renovated into a residence and studio.
The Good Will Fire Engine Co. No. 13 was built in the late 19th century as the Providence Fire Department’s training school for cadets. The restored firehouse will now serve as an affordable venue for local, national, and international artists. The positive impact the project has had on the building and the community is owed to the efforts of the project team of Nick Bauta, founder, John J. McGurk, project manager, Dave Stem, contractor, and Don Richardson, architect.
