Gordon Avenue Business Incubator, Adaptive Reuse Award, 17 Gordon Avenue
The Gordon Avenue Business Incubator project not only puts a vacant industrial property back into productive use, but it has restored an important part of the historic building fabric of the city and has created new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for the community. The project is a true collaboration of civic and business leaders, bankers, architects and planners who recognized the enormous, untapped potential of this site and the ability of this one effort to catalyze revitalization of the neighborhood. The project is innovative in its use of “green” technologies, including energy efficient lighting throughout the building, a green roof, water efficient landscaping, a rainwater capturing and reuse system and energy efficient windows. This cooperative, public-private venture epitomizes the creative development that can not only revitalize a building – but an entire neighborhood. We recognize the hard work of the South Providence Economic Development Corporation and its executive director, Joseph Newsome; Richardson Ogidan, project manager; Robert Stillings, architect; and the many others who made this project feasible.
