India Point Park, Community Involvement/Education Award

The India Point Park project not only provides much-needed recreational space but also actively engages the public in the history of Providence’s maritime past. This exciting endeavor demonstrates the commitment of the city, state, and community to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for individuals and families while at the same time educating park visitors on the early history of the surrounding neighborhood. The creation of the India Point mural involved large segments of the population in its design, creation and implementation. The entire community was galvanized around this important endeavor. Spearheaded by the Friends of India Point Park, the project was further supported through the efforts of the City Parks Department and landscape architect Sarah Bradford, and the mural was designed by Peter Geisser and Mika Seeger, prominent Rhode Island artists. The project epitomizes the spirit of this active community and project collaborators.
