Perla McGuinness, Education Initiative Award, Flynn School
The Society’s Education Initiative Award recognizes innovative and exceptional preservation educational programs or curricula. Perla McGuinness’s fifth grade bilingual class at the F.W. Flynn School participates in a comprehensive program prepared by McGuinness that examines the history of Providence as expressed in its architecture. Students research sites within the city and prepare poems, short essays, and a page in a pop-up book that examines the historic importance of each site. The students not only learn about the history of Providence, but acquire valuable skills in documenting and presenting their research. McGuinness was selected for this award for her dedication and hard work, which help PPS in its mission to educate children about the importance of the built environment.
