Seven Stars Bakery, Adaptive Reuse Award, 820 Hope Street
The rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the Seven Stars Bakery building on Hope Street preserves an important piece of the urban fabric of the streetscape. It is a celebration of a small-scale, twentieth-century vernacular building type much neglected and highly threatened. Owners Lynn and Jim Williams have located a successful commercial enterprise in a former gas station building. Covered over in the 1960s, the garage’s original Art Deco-style detailing had been obscured by a brick front and modern roof. The original form and detail of the gas station have been brought back to life as a result of the rehabilitation, and now offer customers and passers-by a chance to experience the architectural detail found in early twentieth century gas stations. The project has had a positive impact on the neighborhood, bringing renewed life to the street and serving as a local gathering space.
