Smith Hill Community Development Corporation & Rhode Island Housing, Neighborhood Revitalization Award
Neighborhood Revitalization Award for Visions II project work, located largely within the Pekin Street Historic District, Smith Hill
For nearly two years, the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation and Rhode Island Housing have been working to transform foreclosed and vacant properties into vibrant, safe, healthy homes that maintain the historic character of the Smith Hill neighborhood as part of Visions II. In addition, Smith Hill CDC has been engaged in efforts to ensure that these homes remain true to their original exteriors. Without the CDC’s efforts to renovate and rehabilitate the existing historic buildings, the buildings would have been otherwise left vacant, under-utilized, or demolished.
Smith Hill CDC has successfully balanced its primary goal of providing affordable housing in a cost effective manner with its desire to be sensitive to historic design considerations. Visions II consists of more than 50 affordable rental homes in about 20 rehabilitated buildings, many part of the Pekin Street Historic Distirct.
