St. Joseph’s Hospital Campus
Neighbors on the Southside and in Elmwood are closely monitoring an attempt to rezone the St. Joseph’s Hospital campus on Broad Street in the Elmwood neighborhood. The current proposal includes a mix of zoning types, with most of it being C-2, a form of commercial zoning that is very common throughout the city. The hospital’s expansion of parking was a major reason the neighborhood established the North Elmwood local historic district. In the future, PPS hopes housing can be reestablished on the parking lots the hospital built on historic Whitmarsh Street.
The community around St. Joseph’s Hospital is the latest example of neighbors mobilizing around a planning issue. The Mayor’s Office of Community Relations recently produced a Neighborhood Association Toolkit based on several examples of best practices. It is a good resource for anyone who wants to start a new association or improve an existing one.
