Urban Renewal and the Making of Modern Providence

Providence punches above its weight when it comes to progressive urban development, resulting in a vibrant riverfront and downtown. Over the last 60+ years, Providence has moved railroads, highways, and rivers to achieve the urban renaissance many American cities dream of — but neighborhood erasure and displacement are often the dark side of urban growth and progress. Come explore some of the exceptional buildings that preservationists, politicians, and Providence’s own have worked so hard to reimagine, as well as some of the communities and streetscapes we sacrificed to make modern day Providence.
