Introduction to Preservation Trades Program

Are you considering a career in the building trades? Do you have beginner construction skills and want to learn more about how craftspeople preserve Rhode Island’s historic buildings? If so, read on!

PPS offers a paid nine-week work immersion program (March 4-May 3, 2024) that provides on-the-job training in the traditional building trades. Participants will work under the supervision of skilled craftspeople during the program’s duration, and trainees can expect to learn how to understand, assess, repair, and maintain historic buildings. The entry-level work will vary — in a given week, you could find yourself restoring wooden doors, stabilizing 200 year-old floors, or repairing plaster. Overall, trainees should expect to engage in a variety of activities while supporting the program goals.

Additionally, all trainees will gather periodically to receive additional instruction in different heritage building trades, learn about historic preservation practices, and visit local businesses and historical properties. In 2024, the project site is the Esek Hopkins House, an 18th century house owned by the City of Providence. The PPS Building Works workshop at 50 Sims will serve as a secondary location.

This program gives participants an invaluable opportunity to see how preservation craftspeople work, learn new skills, and gain experience in a high-demand industry. While basic carpentry/handiness is desirable, it is not required to participate if the enthusiasm to learn is there!
