Window & Workforce Training Program

Workforce Development through Historic Preservation & Skilled Carpentry Jobs Training

The Providence Preservation Society (PPS), in partnership with Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island and Heritage Restoration Inc., runs the Window and Workforce Training Program (WWTP), a paid, hands-on six-week job training program in historic window restoration on an annual basis. This program offers valuable training to under- and unemployed Rhode Island residents and empowers them to:

  • Repair and maintain historic, wooden sash windows;
  • Build basic business and entrepreneurship skills; and
  • Master other valuable skills for employment in the preservation field.

The third cycle of WWTP was held from January 23-March 3, 2023. The next cycle is planned for 2024.

Under the guidance and supervision of professional preservation craftspeople, PPS staff, and guest lecturers, participants immerse themselves in the architectural history of Providence and the preservation and technical skills needed to care for the thousands of wooden windows across the state. The blended curriculum offers ample hands-on experience, in addition to historic preservation 101 courses, and real-world study of veteran restoration professionals. PPS assists with job placement following successful completion of the training program.

Of the 28 trainees who’ve graduated from the first three cycles of the Window & Workforce Training program, 80% have found employment or additional training opportunities within 60 days of graduation. PPS offers the WWTP on an annual basis.

This program has been generously funded by the United States Department of Labor, 1772 Foundation, the Historic Preservation Education Fund, the Mary Dexter Chafee Fund, the Ida Ballou Littlefield Memorial Trust, the Robert E. Freeman Downcity Fund,  the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Nordson Foundation, the State of Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, and the donors to our Power of Preservation Education Campaign.
