Founded in 1956, Providence Preservation Society (PPS) is one of the country’s first preservation organizations. It is a unique civic, design and community nonprofit with a distinguished history of scholarship, grassroots advocacy, and visionary educational and training initiatives that has spearheaded the successful preservation of significant buildings, cultural landscapes and neighborhoods across the city over nearly seventy years. In 2021, PPS adopted a strategic plan titled Democratizing Preservation that commits to new research, programs and initiatives that address systemic inequities and to a new workforce and climate resilience program that provides trades training in historic preservation and adaptive reuse. PPS educates the public about Providence’s architectural and social history; advocates to save historic buildings and places; promotes green building and sustainability policies that support adaptive reuse and materials recycling, salvage and circular economy practices; and teaches historic building and adaptive reuse skills through its new Building Works training initiative.
PPS’s headquarters office at 24 Meeting Street is known as “The Old Brick Schoolhouse,” a 1769 brick building that is one of the country’s oldest public schools. In 2021, PPS undertook a clean energy renovation of the building that serves as a model for how to balance historic preservation with energy infrastructure retrofits.
We invite you to join PPS as a corporate member and become part of an active civic community that invests in the people and places that make Providence thrive.
